NGC 498 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Pisces on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 281 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 495 , NGC 496 , NGC 499 , NGC 501 .
The object was discovered on October 23, 1856 by the Irish astronomer R. J. Mitchell , an assistant to William Parsons .
