NGC 497 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 366 million light years from the Milky Way and around 220,000 light years in diameter. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 519 , NGC 530 , IC 104 , IC 1693 .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with split arms (Arp catalog) .
The object was discovered on November 6, 1882 by the French astronomer Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
