NGC 3631 = Arp 27 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is about 54 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter . The galaxy is the brightest member of the NGC 3631 group ( LGG 241 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a pronounced arm (Arp catalog) .

The supernovae SN 1964A (Type-IIP), SN 1965L (Type IIP) and SN 1996bu (Type-IIn) were observed here.

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 14, 1789 .
