IC 609 is a merging bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Sextant south of the ecliptic . It is around 241 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 100,000 light years . Together with PGC 1097822 , it forms the optical pair of galaxies Arp 44 .

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a companion of low surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) . In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 3243 .

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on March 21, 1893 .
