IC 167 = Arp 31 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Aries on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 136 million light years away from the Milky Way and is approximately 105,000 light years in diameter.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with the shape of an integral sign (Arp catalog) . The galaxy has remarkably wide-spread spiral arms , possibly due to an encounter with another object, the nearby NGC 694 would be a candidate.

IC 167 is a member of the ten galaxies NGC 691 group ( LGG 34 ). In the same area of the sky there are still u. a. the galaxies NGC 678 , NGC 680 , NGC 691 , IC 1730 .

The object was discovered by Guillaume Bigourdan on January 4, 1889 .
