IC 172 is a radio galaxy of the Hubble type S? in the constellation whale south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 369 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly. 
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 768 , IC 173 , IC 175 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 12, 1893 .
