IC 170 is an elliptical dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 234 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 20,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 707 , NGC 731 , NGC 757 , IC 168 , among others .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 17, 1892 .
