IC 173 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 369 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 772 and IC 175 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 26, 1893 .
