NGC 691 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Aries on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 124 million light years from the Milky Way and about 120,000 light years in diameter . It is the brightest member of the ten galaxies in the NGC 691 group ( LGG 34 ). In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 680 , NGC 694 , IC 167 , IC 1730 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2005W was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on November 13, 1786 .
