NGC 686 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 200 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered on October 26, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
