The motorway chapel in Hegau (officially Emmaus chapel ) is located at the service station Im Hegau West near Engen on the federal motorway 81 from Stuttgart heading south. It was inaugurated on July 15, 2005 by Auxiliary Bishop Paul Wehrle from the Archdiocese of Freiburg and Regional Bishop Ulrich Fischer from the Regional Church of Baden.

Building history

Architectural competition

Instead of the original, too expensive dome model by the Hungarian architect Imre Makovecz , the design by the Ravensburger architect Wolf R. Bürhaus was selected after an architectural competition.

The complex consists of a high cross, an inner courtyard and a chapel in the shape of a cuboid. The chapel is reached through a narrow inner passage. The interior is spartan. The view falls on the southern outer wall, in which a bright cross lights up through incisions through the wall and through the incident light. A wooden Gothic Pietà indicates life and death. The wooden floor of the chapel comes from a Freiburg patrician house. Three panels on the west wall by Bernhard Maier, Sigmaringen, depict the Emmaus incident.

Renovation 2015

The chapel was built in natural concrete using lightweight construction. Moisture led to blackening of the outer walls and mold growth inside. After 10 years, the concrete was therefore primed and covered with a protective glaze.

Ecumenism

The chapel is not supported by a denomination but by a private ecumenical sponsoring association. The chairman of the sponsoring association is the Engen city pastor (as of 2015). Individual travelers or travel groups should come to rest here regardless of religion or worldview. Ecumenical, Catholic and Protestant services are held here.

Visitor / Intercession / Guest books

In the ten years up to 2015, 24 guest books were filled with personal concerns, requests or impressions from passing drivers and 500,000 visitors were counted.
