Imre Makovecz (born November 20, 1935 in Budapest ; † September 27, 2011 there ) was a Hungarian architect .

Act

Alongside György Csete and the Pécs group , Makovecz represented Hungarian organic architecture . His buildings are influenced by Rudolf Steiner , Antoni Gaudí , Frank Lloyd Wright and by Ödön Lechner's Hungarian Art Nouveau . Makovecz became known for buildings of a strongly anthropomorphic character, such as the funeral hall of the Farkasrét cemetery in Budapest (1975), whose vaulted ribs appear to be modeled on a human costal arch, and the Sárospatak cultural center , whose floor plan signals “open arms”.

The Redoute (Vigadó) in Szigetvár (1985–1987) is one of Makovecz's main works. Makovecz's work received international attention especially in the 1970s and 1980s in connection with postmodernism ; after the fall of the Wall he was allowed to design the Hungarian pavilion for the world exhibition in Seville , whose reference to the church tower motif illustrates the architect's Christian-national attitude. In 1989 he was awarded honorary membership of the Association of German Architects BDA .
