NGC 698 is a 14 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 366 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter. It probably forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair with NGC 696 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 1739 .
The object was discovered on November 29, 1837 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
