NGC 681 (also known as the Little Sombrero Galaxy ) is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 79 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years across . Together with NGC 701 , IC 1738 and PGC 6667 it forms the NGC 681 group .

The object was discovered on November 28, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
