NGC 689 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sab in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 186 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 1729 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2007rv was observed here.
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Ormond Stone .
