NGC 690 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 230 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter .
The object was discovered on November 9, 1885 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
