NGC 701 is an active bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBc with a high rate of star formation in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 83 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 681 and IC 1738 .
The type IIP supernova SN 2004fc was observed here.
The object was discovered on January 10, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
