NGC 688 is a barred spiral galaxy with a high star formation rate of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Triangle in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 191 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 130,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 669 , NGC 700 , NGC 679 , IC 1732 , among others .
The object was discovered on September 16, 1865 by the German-Danish astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
