IC 1738 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 579 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 155,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 681 and NGC 701 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on December 8, 1895 .
