Edgar Chahine (Armenian Էդգար Շահին, born October 31, 1874 in Vienna , † March 18, 1947 in Paris ) was a French painter and etcher of Armenian descent.

Life

Edgar Chahine began his studies in Constantinople , where his father was one of the directors of the Ottoman bank.

Following the advice of his teacher, the Armenian painter Milkon Tiratzuyan, he continued his studies in Italy .

In 1892 he became a student at the Mechitarist High School in Venice and at the same time studied at the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia in the studios of the painter Antonio Ermolao Paoletti and the sculptor Antonio Dal Zotto . In 1895 he finally settled in Paris. He continued his studies at the Académie Julian . From 1896 to 1899 he exhibited his works at the Société des Artistes Français . In 1897 the art critic Loys Delteil and the graphic dealer Edmond Sagot noticed his etching exhibited in the Galerie de Bodinière.

He received gold medals for his engravings at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and at the 5th International Biennale in Venice in 1903. Chahine received French citizenship in 1925 and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1932 .

From 1905 he illustrated works by Anatole France , Octave Mirbeau , Gabriel Mourey , Colette , Gustave Flaubert , Edmond and Jules de Goncourt and Paul Verlaine .

In addition to his artistic work, Edgar Chahine and his friend Archag Tchobanian campaigned for the recognition of Armenia, supported by personalities such as Anatole France, Jean Jaurès and Georges Clemenceau .

Exhibitions of his work took place in the Armenian capital Yerevan in 1936, 1984 and 1994.
