The European Northern Observatory ( ENO for short ) is a research institute in the Canary Islands to share the telescopes of the observatories of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias  (IAC).

The administration of the ENO is located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna , the observatories used are the Observatorio del Teide (OT) on Tenerife and the Roque-de-los-Muchachos-Observatory (ORM) on La Palma . In total, over 30 instruments from different carriers are used at the two observatories, and telescopes are available for night and solar observations .

The ENO was founded on May 26, 1979 by the states of Spain , Denmark , the United Kingdom and Sweden , the agreement regulates the observation times of the individual telescopes, Spain has a share of 20%, for international projects within the framework of the ENO at least 5% of the usable time made available by the telescope operators. With the additional agreement signed on April 8, 1983, Germany also participates in the ENO with the DFG . Law 31/1988, Protección de la Calidad Astronómica de los Observatorios del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias , passed on October 31, 1988, aims to ensure that astronomical conditions such as low light pollution are guaranteed. Other member states are Belgium , Finland , France , Italy and Norway .
