IC 4271 = Arp 40 is an interacting pair of galaxies in the constellation Hounds, which is about 766 million light years from the Milky Way .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a companion of low surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) . NGC 1347 was discovered on July 10, 1896 by the astronomer Stéphane Javelle . The interacting component is the galaxy PGC 3096774 .
