IC 4256 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is an estimated 304 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5187 , IC 4239 , IC 4240 , IC 4242 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on June 30, 1896 .
