NGC 4027 (also Arp 22 ) is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBd with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Raven south of the celestial equator . It is around 68 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy has a special shape because one of the spiral arms is more pronounced than the other. The cause is suspected to be a collision with another galaxy in the past; a possible candidate would be PGC 37772 ( NGC 4027A ).
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of one -armed spiral galaxies (Arp catalog) .
NGC 4027 is a member of the 27 galaxies NGC 4038 group ( LGG 263 ), a galaxy group that also contains the antenna galaxies NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 .
The Type II supernova SN 1996W was observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 7, 1785 .
