NGC 4042 is a compact dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type C in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 319 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4055 , NGC 4056 , NGC 4057 , NGC 4060 .
The object was discovered on March 18, 1865 by the astronomer Albert Marth .
