NGC 4045 = NGC 4046 is an active bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is an estimated 84 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. Together with PGC 38033 (also NGC 4045A ) it forms the optical pair of galaxies Holm 320 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4063 , NGC 4073 , NGC 4075 , IC 2989 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1985B was observed here.
The object was discovered on December 20, 1784 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
