NGC 4062 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 34 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter . Together with 18 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4031 and IC 2999 .
The object was discovered on March 20, 1787 by the astronomer William Herschel using an 18.7 inch telescope .
