NGC 4051 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is an estimated 33 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy contains a supermassive black hole with a mass of 1.73 million solar masses and is classified as a Seyfert 1.5 galaxy .
She is part of the M109 group and the brightest member of the NGC 4051 group ( LGG 269 ).

The supernovae SN 1983I (Type Ic), SN 2003ie (Type IIP) and SN 2010br (Type Ib / c) were observed here.

The object was discovered on February 6, 1788 by the astronomer William Herschel using an 18.7 inch telescope.
