NGC 4183 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc with extensive star formation in the constellation of hounds on the northern sky . It is estimated to be 44 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy has a weak-appearing core and an open spiral structure, which, however, cannot be viewed directly because the view from Earth falls on the side of the object , similar to the case of the Andromeda Galaxy . It is part of the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster and a member of the NGC 4051 group ( LGG 269 ).
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4138 .
The supernova SN 1968U was observed here.
The object was discovered on January 14, 1788 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
