NGC 4179 is a Lenticular Galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 54 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter. Together with six other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4123 group ( LGG 275 ).

The object was discovered by William Herschel on January 24, 1784 .
