NGC 4157 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 38 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 ly in diameter. The galaxy is part of the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster .
In the same area of ​​the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4187 .

Ultraviolet absorption by GALEX

The type IIP supernovae SN 1937A , SN 1955A and SN 2003J were observed here.

The object was discovered on March 9, 1788 by William Herschel .
