NGC 4151 , also known as " Sauron's Eye ", is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type SBab in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is an estimated 46 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4156 and PGC 38756 , it forms the galaxy trio Holm 345 .

In the center of the galaxy there is a supermassive black hole that emits X- rays. The exact origin of this radiation has not yet been clarified (as of March 2011).

On April 1, 2018, the type II supernova SN 2018aoq was discovered as part of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS) .

The object was discovered by William Herschel on March 17, 1787 .
