NGC 4156 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active galaxy core of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 303 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4151 and PGC 38756 , it forms the galaxy trio Holm 345 .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4145 , IC 3014 , IC 3022 .

The supernovae SN 1974A was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 17, 1787 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
