Yaw Osafo-Maafo is one of the most famous bankers and politicians in Ghana . In addition to his office as Minister for Finance and Economic Planning and later as Minister for Education and Sports in the Ghanaian Cabinet, he is a founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party .

Osafo-Maafo received his secondary education at the renowned Achimota School in Accra . For his outstanding academic achievements, he was recognized by the Ghanaian Association of Science Teachers. He enrolled in engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi . In 1967 he completed his studies here as a mechanical engineer.

Osafo-Maafo moved to the USA in 1968 to train as an engineer. He graduated from the Institute for Metal Construction.

Career

Osafo-Maafo was hired by a Ghanaian bank, the Bank for Housing and Construction, and was appointed bank director there until 1982. Between 1982 and 1989 he worked in this position and developed economic contacts, particularly on the international financial market.

In 1990 he was appointed director of the National Investment Bank by the then Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC) under the then military dictator and later President Jerry Rawlings . In this position, Osafo-Maafo had been entrusted with the ambitious goals of the government to restructure the loss-making bank. After only two years he managed to make a profit.

In 1992 he became a representative in the Constituent Assembly through the Ghanaian Engineers Association. Osafo-Maafo was able to exercise his influence on the fourth constitution of Ghana , in particular on the financial constitution.

He became a founding member of the New Patriotic Party alongside Albert Adu Boahen . He has been a member of the Ghanaian parliament for the constituency of Akyem Oda ( Akyem Oda Constituency ) since 1996 and was confirmed in office in 2000 and 2004.

Between 2001 and 2005, Osafo-Maafo was Minister of Finance and Economic Planning in President John Agyekum Kufuor's cabinet . Between 2005 and April 2006 he served in Kufuor's second term in the ministerial office of education and sport. The Ministry of Education and Sports was expanded to include science in April 2006 and was continued by Minister Papa Owusu-Ankomah .

Awards

In addition to his election to the constituent assembly in 1992, his honor by the West African Bankers Association in 1989 for his special services to the banking industry should be highlighted.
