The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST for short ; German  Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ) is the second university in the country after the University of Ghana . It was named after the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah .

history

KNUST College of Engineering, 2010

The founding history of KNUST began with the founding of the Kumasi College of Technology on January 22nd, 1952. On this date, 200 student teachers were transferred from Achimota to the new university. KNUST was officially granted university status by administrative act on August 22, 1961. In October 1952, the Faculty of Engineering (School of Engineering) and the Department of Commerce were opened in the KNUST and the first students were accepted. In 1955, the Faculty of Engineering at KNUST entered into a collaboration agreement with the University of London that for the first time enabled students to take the Bachelor of Engineering through an external exam at the University of London.

The Department of Pharmacy was opened in January 1953 when KNUST took over the former School of Pharmacy at the Korle-Bu Hospital in Accra. The Department of Agriculture was also opened in 1953 and a variety of courses were organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. A Department of General Studies has also been set up to support the other departments and to take exams in science and art.

As early as 1957, the growing university was expanded to include a department for architecture, urban planning and buildings. As the number of students increased, it was decided to specialize in the subjects of natural sciences and technology. As a result of this decision, the Teacher Training College with the art school was outsourced in January 1958 and included in the Winneba Training College in Winneba . In 1959 the trade department was relocated to Achimota. This later became the current department for administrative sciences at the University of Ghana in Legon, a suburb of Accra.

In December 1960, President Nkrumah set up a University Commission to discuss a recommendation for the development of higher education in Ghana. The question remained whether the University College of Ghana and the Kumasi College of Technology should be merged into the independent University of Ghana . According to the report of the commission in early 1961, the government decided against the solution of a large university and founded the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi by law of August 22, 1961 , alongside the University of Ghana in Legon .

After the military coup against Nkrumah on February 24, 1966, KNUST was renamed the University of Science and Technology . It was not until 1998 that the university was renamed back to its original name, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology .

campus

New building, 1952

The university is located on a seven square mile main campus in Kumasi , the capital of the Ashanti region .

Six student residences (English Halls of Residence) have been built on campus . Each of these buildings has a common room for the younger and older students. A canteen, tennis and badminton court are available on campus. The six buildings are named Unity, University (both for male students only), Africa (for female students), Republic, Queen's and Independence (mixed).

A Roman Catholic church, a Protestant church and a university mosque for students were built near the main entrance to the campus in Kumasi. Exhibitions are held in the university's art gallery in the university building, and there is a shop selling works by local artists. The college also has a club for students and their visitors, a botanical garden, a swimming pool and the Great Hall, where representative events are held.

Another university campus is located in Tarkwa near Takoradi in the Western Region . One of the two mining departments is located there, as there are significant mining areas for gold and other raw materials near Tarwka.
