NGC 4049 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type Sd in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 35 million light years from the Milky Way and about <10,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4040 , NGC 4048 , NGC 4053 , NGC 4064 .
The object was discovered on April 27, 1785 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
