NGC 4048 is a galaxy of Hubble type S? with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 213 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years across. Together with SDSS J120252.32 + 180030.0 and PGC 1547969 , it forms an optical galaxy trio .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4040 , NGC 4049 , NGC 4064 .
The object was discovered on March 23, 1827 by the astronomer John Herschel .
