NGC 4020 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 34 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. Together with 18 other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4274 group ( LGG 279 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3971 , IC 2984 , IC 2985 , IC 2986 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on February 3, 1788 .
