NGC 4017 is a spiral radio galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is an estimated 154 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 4016 it forms the galaxy pair Arp 305 and it is the brightest member of the NGC 4017 group ( LGG 262 ).

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class Unclassified double galaxies .

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3988 , NGC 4004 , NGC 4016 , IC 2982 .

The type II supernovae SN 2006st and SN 2007an were observed here.

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 11, 1785 .
