NGC 3997 is a merging bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBb / P in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 212 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with five other galaxies, it forms the NGC 3997 group ( LGG 260 ).
The object was discovered by John Herschel on February 19, 1827 .
