NGC 3983 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 189 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 3951 , NGC 4002 , NGC 4003 , IC 744 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 10, 1785 .
