NGC 3982 is an active bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 53 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 ly in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3972 , NGC 3977 , NGC 3980 , NGC 3990 .

Here the supernova SN 1998aq was observed.

The object was discovered on April 14, 1789 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
