NGC 3990 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Ursa Major at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 35 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 ly in diameter. The galaxy is a member of the Ursa Major Galaxy Cluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3977 , NGC 3980 , NGC 3982 , NGC 3998 .
The object was discovered on April 14, 1789 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
