NGC 3978 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 450 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on March 19, 1790 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
