NGC 3963 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 146 million light years from the Milky Way and about 40,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 3958 it forms a gravitationally bound pair of galaxies and is the brightest member of the NGC 3963 group ( LGG 251 ).
The Type Ic supernova SN 1997ei was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 18, 1790 .
