NGC 3946 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 293 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 3929 , NGC 3940 , NGC 3947 , NGC 3954 .
The object was discovered by Guillaume Bigourdan on April 23, 1886 .
