NGC 3966 = NGC 3986 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a with an active galaxy core in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 146 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light-years across. Together with IC 2979 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair and is considered a member of the NGC 3995 group ( LGG 259 ).
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3991 , NGC 3994 , IC 2978 , IC 2981 .

The object was discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest on May 8, 1864 .
