IC 2979 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 140 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light-years across. Together with ten other galaxies, it forms the NGC 3995 group ( LGG 259 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3966 , NGC 3991 , NGC 3994 , IC 2978 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on June 12, 1896 .
