NGC 3947 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBb in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 275 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 115,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 3937 , NGC 3946 , NGC 3954 , IC 2968 .

The supernovae SN 1972C , SN 2001P ( Type-Ia ), SN 2006aa (Type-IIn) and SN 2013G (Type-Ia) were observed here.

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 26, 1785 .
