NGC 3953 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (r) bc in the constellation Great Bear that is an estimated 50 million light years away from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1789 by the astronomer William Herschel with an 18.7 inch reflecting telescope.
Supernovae
Two supernovae were observed in NGC 3953; both were type Ia: SN 2001dp and SN 2006bp .
Surroundings
NGC 3953 is a member of the M-109 group, a group of galaxies that includes approximately 50 galaxies.
